BMW hand‐picks SAIT students for summer co‐op opportunity

Calgary, AB — Automotive Service Technology (AST) students at SAIT Polytechnic are competing for an exclusive opportunity to participate in an Apprenticeship Mentoring Program with BMW.

For the second year, BMW has approached SAIT and three other post‐secondary institutes in Canada to select students for a career path at BMW/MINI retailers. A BMW rep will begin the process at SAIT this week with a presentation to all interested students. By the time the application and interview process is complete in March, a number of SAIT students will be chosen for a special internship position at a BMW location in either Calgary or Edmonton.

"SAIT is proud to have such a great working relationship with BMW," says Brian Moukperian, Dean of the School of Transportation. "To have SAIT students being hand‐picked and groomed by one of the top automotive companies in the world is a significant reflection of the success of our program."

The BMW mentoring program was launched in 2011 and expanded in 2012, in an effort to find and recruit top caliber apprenticeship technicians who could be trained to meet the technological demands of new generation BMW/MINI vehicles. Highly computerized, BMWs require exceptional diagnostic knowledge from their service team.

"The best and brightest technical minds are required to meet the ever‐increasing technological demands of new generation BMW and MINI vehicles," says John Cardinale from BMW Canada. "Finding and recruiting top caliber apprentice technicians is the goal of the BMW Apprentice Mentoring Program, and we are delighted to have a partner such as SAIT Polytechnic to help us in our quest."

The students selected to work with BMW next summer will return to SAIT to graduate from the AST program before transitioning into a full training program at BMW to become certified BMW Technicians.

The AST program — known as Motor Mechanics in 1916 — is SAIT's original discipline. The School of Transportation trains more than 100 AST students every year and has a 100 per cent employment rate.
